“I give God thanks. It could’ve been worse and so I thank God for having saved us all, inclusive of the occupants of the other vehicle,” Director of Education Clare Browne told Observer on Sunday morning.

Recounting the distressing traffic accident he was involved in on Saturday night, Browne said that it was around 11:20 while he was travelling from west to east on the Sir Sydney Walling Highway with his teenage son, when an SUV travelling the opposite direction collided with his vehicle near the former Transport Board building.

From his perspective, Browne described the moments just before the collision with the other vehicle occurred.

“I just held onto my steering wheel and braced myself for an impact. I could see the trajectory and it appeared to be coming towards me. I am at the edge of the road, at the left side and so I was just hoping that the vehicle would veer left,” he said.

Upon impact, his vehicle’s air bags deployed. However, Browne and his son were mostly unharmed.

“My son is in no way injured, hopefully, thankfully. There [are] no physical signs, no kind of physical pain or anything. I cannot determine the psychological impact, because I know he was very petrified, traumatised by the whole thing,” he said of his son’s wellbeing after the incident.

He also commented on his own condition, stating that a slight pain his shoulder was seemingly the only residual injury he sustained.

However, he also expressed his concern for the occupants of the other vehicle involved in the accident.

“I didn’t really get their names or anything, but I’m concerned about their state of health … they left in an ambulance,” he said.

Browne added that from his observation the three occupants of severely damaged vehicle — a male driver, a female passenger and a child — would have sustained injuries in addition to psychological trauma,

According to Browne, police personnel were the first to arrive on the scene while the EMS personnel and ambulance that treated and transported the three occupants of the severely damaged vehicle to the hospital, arrived later.

“The position that I take this morning [is] one of gratitude for life. I have an even greater appreciation for life and greater understanding of God and his mercies and his grace,” he said.

The accident remains under police investigation.
