Hurricane Maria knocked out power and all communication in Dominica overnight Monday as its category 5 winds flattened buildings, ripped off roofs and drenched the island with so much rainfall, streets became rivers.

Seven people were confirmed dead up to yesterday morning. The country’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit joined a team to tour the island via helicopter on Wednesday to start an assessment of the damage. This was a day after he himself put out an SOS and had to be rescued from his damaged home. Photo courtesy Peter Hallam and Kelly Construction.
