The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) is currently transitioning overhead power lines to underground cables along Friar’s Hill Road, according to APUA Electric Business Unit Superintendent Eustace Lynch.

“We’re in the process of putting the circuits on Friar’s Hill Road underground,” Lynch confirmed in a recent interview.

The project involves carefully separating and transitioning from the existing overhead system to the new underground infrastructure.

“We are actually in the process of separating the overhead from the underground. We are doing that work as we speak,” Lynch stated, indicating active construction is underway.

When asked about similar underground cable projects in other areas of Antigua, Lynch said he was not aware of plans beyond Friar’s Hill Road.

While Barbuda as well as some government housing developments already utilize underground power distribution, the Friar’s Hill Road project is one of the government’s previously promised protective measures to electrical infrastructure across the island.

The transition from overhead to underground power lines can help protect electrical infrastructure from damage during high winds and hurricanes.
