United Progressive Party (UPP) senator, Shawn Nicholas has called on information minister Melford Nicholas, to come to the assistance of OBSERVER media and intervene in its eviction notice matter.
The media entity was given notice last week that it must vacate its Pavilion Drive rental property by October 31.
Nicholas who described the situation as “unfortunate”, said every effort should be made to ensure the longevity of the media entity.
“I want to make a special appeal to the minister of information in particular, to take keen interest in this matter and see how we can save OBSERVER media group; the only independent media here in Antigua and Barbuda,” she said
The senator said, looking at the history of the media house and how OBSERVER Radio came into being, it is a struggle that all Antiguans and Barbudans must appreciate and support.
“You have to continue in the struggle, you are not for the government, you are not for the opposition, you criticise as you see necessary and we need that. I think Antigua and Barbuda will be better for it, because a free media means better democracy for all of us here and for any democracy to survive we need a free and independent media,” Nicholas stated.
