Coach of the Leeward Islands Hurricanes, Reginald Benjamin is not surprised that Nevisian Stuart Williams has been selected as his replacement for the final two matches in the Regional 4-Day cricket competition.
The Hurricanes play against Guyana Jaguars from April 7, and T&T Red Force from April 15.
“When I was in St Kitts [my] ears were close to the ground and you kind of hear whispers even before now. I get input from former players, current players, coaches, and so forth to see if the direction for Leeward Islands cricket is the correct direction.
“In St Kitts, there is a certain individual that I call Mr Leeward Islands and his objective was to see me out and it’s amazing that it was so blatantly displayed, but I was not surprised,” he said.
Benjamin was sent on vacation earlier this week following what President of the Leeward Islands Cricket Board (LICB), Enoch Lewis said was a unanimous decision by the board of directors.
Ironically, the development came less than a week after news that Benjamin’s lawyer had written to the board claiming match fees he believes are due to him.
The coach is, however, satisfied that he has done the best job possible during his stint with the sub-regional franchise.
“Take the Leeward Islands of 2015 before I took over and the Leeward Islands now. Do you see improvement? If you can see improvement you have to be honest with yourself. It’s not about me Reginald Benjamin, it’s about the process. People want instant and it’s not going to be instant,” he said.
“We’re taking cricketers that are playing 20/20 cricket in their territories to come and play one step down from West Indies and it takes time.”
Leeward Islands are currently second from bottom in the 4-Day standings with 66.4 points, just slightly ahead of T&T Red Force with 63.8 points.
Guyana Jaguars lead the competition with 109.8 points ahead of Barbados Pride on 99.2 points.
