For his intervention which ultimately helped to save the life of the Governor General’s Goodwill Emissary, Sandra Lady Williams, Corporal Shane Williams of the Royal Police Force was among six men who were awarded the Governor General’s Faithful and Meritorious Service Award for their exemplary service yesterday.
At the investiture ceremony, Corporal Williams was lauded for his 20 years of distinguished service, having served across multiple police divisions, including in the Criminal Investigation Unit, and currently as an Aide at Government House where his most notable achievement was his quick action during a recent health crisis that saved the life of Lady Williams.
“I want you to know that your commitment to the safety and well-being of our community, as well as your life-saving actions to Her Excellency the Governor General’s Goodwill Emissary, my dear wife demonstrate the highest level of dedication and service,” Sir Rodney said.
Meanwhile, among the other individuals honoured were Dr Radcliffe Robins for his work in veterinary medicine; Joseph Martin for his role in cultural preservation through photography; Vijay Tewani for his diplomatic service as Honorary Consul of India to Antigua and Barbuda; Garfield Burford for his work in journalism; and Everton Cornelius Sr for his achievements and work in sports.
Governor General Sir Rodney noted that “these awards are a testament to the values of hard work, commitment, and the positive impact each of you has had on the people of Antigua and Barbuda … As we celebrate these honourees, let us all be reminded of the importance of service. It is through acts of dedication, sacrifice, and compassion that we build a stronger, more united nation”.
Speaking to reporters after the awards ceremony, each of the men spoke about their pride in receiving these awards.
Burford remarked that receiving the award was a “humbling” moment”.
“It’s a really great honour to receive this Governor General’s Faithful and Meritorious Service award … I think it speaks to the Governor General’s magnanimity. I’m really passionate about the field of journalism. It is my life, my vocation, my calling.”
“It is indeed a humbling experience,” Dr Robins remarked. “This work is done out of a sense of purpose, a sense of duty, and a sense of nation-building … Throughout my nearly 40-year career as a veterinarian in Antigua and Barbuda, I’ve helped at least three Antiguans become veterinarians and transformed our attitude towards animal care and compassion.”
Cornelius Sr also noted that he “greatly appreciated” the award, noting his dedication of “50 years to sports, continuing to do the things I love and helping to develop our country through sports”.
Meanwhile, Joe Martin has served as the official photographer to the Governor General for 30 years. He also operates the Photogenesis photo studio, and an events facility Julees. He stated that photography was something that chose him and that hard work, dedication to the craft and supportive staff members had propelled him to where he is today.
