National women’s cricketer Shawnisha Hector is no longer contracted by Cricket West Indies (CWI).

In an exclusive interview with Observer on Wednesday, Hector revealed that the region’s governing body for cricket did not renew her development contract when it was up for review some three months ago.

“The CWI contract? No I am not under it anymore but I have been training from since the lockdown and I am still training all now, keeping fit,” she said. “The contract ended in June or July [this year] and yes, there has been talks with CWI but I didn’t get it [the contract] back. They just notified me about that [not renewing the contract].”

Hector, who made her international debut on November 1, 2019 when she became the first Antiguan to play for the West Indies women’s team, said the development came as a surprise as, in her mind, she was showing constant improvement.

“I don’t know where I went wrong because every time we are called up for training or come back as a team for training I keep improving in terms of my fitness, strength and all of my assets improve … I just keep on trying to learn as much as I could,” the player said.

“The aim for me is actually to keep improving, do the best I could do and just stay focused until the time comes again.”

In July 2019, Hector was amongst seven new players contracted by CWI after she had, that same year, led the Leeward Islands senior women’s team in the regional tournament.

Asked if she thinks it’s possible to regain her status as a contracted player, Hector said she has been working with former West Indies fast bowler and coach Winston Benjamin and trainer Carl Casey in hopes of a return to International cricket.

“I’ve done all that I could have done and I am still working towards doing as much more as I possibly can but now, I am working with some different coaches [because] I could have areas that they could see that need to be worked on, that Winston or Casey might not be seeing that I may need to put in some work on,” she said.

Hector said she is currently training at the New Winthorpes playing field on a daily basis as she seeks to improve her skills as a player.
