Forever in my heart. Those were the poignant words from soca star Patrice Roberts today on what would have been Ricardo Drue’s 39th birthday.
The Trinidadian singer said life was still tough without Drue – to whom she had been engaged since Carnival festivities two years ago when he dropped to one knee live on stage.
Drue died last December after being found unresponsive. He was pronounced dead in hospital later that night.
Seven months on, Roberts said she would continue to smile but that the pain was still there.
“I find some comfort in the memories we shared and the love that remains,” she posted to her official Facebook page.
Also paying tribute to the Vagabond star on social media was Drue’s mother Nicole Barriteau.
She said she cried from the depth of her soul as she recalled the day he was born – July 31 1985. “It was you and me against the world – together yet alone”, Nicole wrote.
She said losing her son had been her toughest battle yet, adding – quote – “you are now in the hands of the Divine Creator and all will be well.”
Last night, fans flocked to the star’s annual Druesday concert – held for the first time without the main act himself.
Drue had been one of Antigua Carnival’s most familiar faces since he first competed on the Party Monarch stage in 2010.
