On Friday, Government officials and stakeholders gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony of the TFA Athletic Club, a multi-phase sports and tourism development project to be constructed near the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium.

While addressing the nation’s need for modern sporting infrastructure, Minister of Sports Daryl Matthew emphasized the facility’s importance. “Despite having the talent, determination and will, sometimes what we lack are the facilities,” Matthew stated, highlighting the government’s commitment to investing in sports development either independently or through partnerships.

Speaking about the features of the new project, Project Coordinator Tim Perkins outlined the four-phase master plan being developed by Q5 Emerging Markets Fund and local company GSI. Phase one, scheduled for completion within two years, includes three paddle ball courts, a 7,300-square-foot state-of-the-art gym and restaurant facilities. Subsequent phases will feature an aquatic center with a 50-meter swimming pool, a 50-suite sports hotel, a specialized sports medical center and recreational golf facilities.

Tourism Minister Henry Charles “Max” Fernandez highlighted the project’s significance for sports tourism, noting its timely development during a record year for tourism arrivals. “This state-of-the-art facility is more than just a venue for training and competitions. It’s a beacon of opportunity for athletes of all levels, a hub for community engagement, and a catalyst for economic growth through sports tourism,” Fernandez stated.

The development, particularly targeted at Antigua and Barbuda’s young population, with over 50 percent under 30 years old, is scheduled to begin construction in the first quarter of 2025. The project aims to enhance both the nation’s sporting infrastructure and its tourism product while providing modern facilities for local athletes and visitors alike.
