A 39-year-old man died after he was involved in a vehicular accident in Herberts on Tuesday night, during the process of delivering Christmas hams and turkeys to residents of the St John’s City South Constituency.
Shawn Jones of Greenbay reportedly lost control of the truck he was driving and was fatally injured when the vehicle flipped and landed on him. The white Daihatsu Delta truck was reportedly being used to distribute the items, a customary practice in Antigua and Barbuda during the Christmas season.
According to police reports, Jones was driving the truck uphill on a by-road in Herberts when it began to skid. He was unable to regain control of it and the vehicle overturned and Jones was pinned underneath it.
Officers from St John’s Fire Station arrived at the scene and used the Jaws of Life to extricate Jones. He sustained severe injuries to his chest and head and was pronounced dead at 11:06 pm, approximately an hour and a-half after the incident occurred.
Three passengers in the truck were also injured. They were complaining of pain and were taken to Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre where they were treated and subsequently discharged.
