The government’s ongoing efforts to increase domestic ownership in the tourism sector have gained momentum, with Cabinet announcing plans for a comprehensive investment conference next month amid several new development opportunities.

During last week’s post-Cabinet briefing, Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst revealed details of a new $200 million eco-friendly resort development at Two-Foot Bay in Barbuda, which he said presents continued opportunities for local investors across multiple locations.

The announcement follows months of government initiatives to encourage Antiguans and Barbudans to participate more actively in the tourism sector, particularly in areas like Pensioners’ Beach, Willoughby Bay, and Shell Beach.

A committee headed by Garfield Joseph of the Antigua and Barbuda Investment Authority has been appointed to organize the investment conference, which will include options for online participation and showcase opportunities across various sectors.

The conference comes as major projects like the Two Foot Bay resort demonstrate continued international investor confidence in the nation’s tourism sector. The development will utilize innovative hurricane-resistant construction techniques, employing ground screws instead of traditional concrete foundations.

Local participation in such developments has become increasingly crucial as the tourism sector continues to expand, with the government particularly targeting citizens who have substantial savings earning minimal returns in traditional banking institutions.

The initiative extends to Barbuda, where approximately 200 acres will be allocated for a golf course development, adding to the island’s ongoing infrastructure developments including renewable energy projects and road construction.
