Fraudsters are, according to the country’s governor general, using fake Instagram, Facebook/messenger accounts in his name, Rodney Williams, to solicit funds for hurricane recovery efforts in Antigua and Barbuda.
The office of the governor general issued a press release yesterday, alerting the public and warning that “the social media sites as listed in this release are NOT authorised sites.”
The sites identified are “Instagram (rodney williams 01) and Messenger/Facebook (Rodney Williams).”
The press release stated, “The general public is asked to take note that since the passage of the destructive hurricanes in September this year, the Office of the Governor General has received a significant number of reports from individuals that they have received messages via social media channels including which are inconsistent with the work of the Office of the Governor General.”
The governor general’s office said the messages include offers to provide grant funding on behalf of the government and or/the United Nations.
Sir Rodney, according to the release, does not have an Instagram account while, the official Facebook page for the Office of the Governor General is “Governor General”, therefore requests from any other account should be ignored, blocked or rejected.
