The United Progressive Party (UPP) caretaker for St John’s Rural South, Gladys Potter has announced her decision to withdraw from the upcoming primary election.

In her message, Potter said that the UPP leadership, upon the request of the St John’s Rural South branch, has approved holding of a primary to select its newest candidate.

Last year, Emmanuel Peters and Jermaine Edwards told Observer media that they were contesting the caretaker position.

“After consulting with my family, team members, and supporters, it became clearer that the branch is going down a path that takes it away from the integrity, unity, and principles, a path that I shall not take nor facilitate,” Potter stated in her detailed announcement.

She emphasised her continued commitment of advocating for the residents of Antigua and Barbuda, particularly those she describes as “downtrodden”.

She pledged to continue working towards positive change through “available platforms” and remains dedicated to fighting against “fear, hate, and poverty”.

“I assure you that I will continue to be one of the voices for the downtrodden, for justice, for truth, and for right actions,” she declared.

The candidate’s withdrawal comes after the UPP set 21 November as the date for a primary to select a new representative for the constituency, according to Potter.

Concluding her statement with a spiritual message, Potter encouraged citizens to remain hopeful and continue fulfilling their civic duties, stating that “not man, but God will be still good and right”.

“Be of good courage, make good decisions, and never ever fail to fulfill your civic duties,” she added.
