The first open try-outs for the 2019 Freekick foundation College Player Showcase which was scheduled to kick off this Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Antigua Recreation Grounds (ARG) has been postponed.
Arlene Josiah, the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) Events Coordinator revealed this new development in an exclusive interview.
Although Josiah did not indicate the reason behind the postponement, she did however assure the public that a new date has been set for December 22nd at 9 a.m. at the ARG.
The showcase, which will run from January 17th- 20th in Antigua, will give student athletes from the Eastern Caribbean an opportunity to interact with football coaches and recruiters from US universities.
The four-day event will begin on the 17th with a meet-and-greet social, and end on the 20th with inter-squad scrimmage games.
A total of 64 students, 44 boys and 22 girls, have registered for the 2019 event.
Josiah however expressed her discouragement in the number of entries.
“I am not really happy with the number because we gave out over a hundred forms and up to this day some of them haven’t returned the forms. We keep on asking why you not filling out the forms and some parents said that the SAT exam itself is too costly. The ABFA in collaboration with the Ministry of Education will however be offering free SAT classes, but parents said they just can’t afford the exams itself.”
Josiah also noted that although 64 youth players applied but only 30 would make it to the showcase in January.
“Since we will be hosting the showcase, we got the opportunity to feature the largest number of players. So we would have 30 while the others countries would bring their players.
“This means that at the tryouts we will be cutting players – so they need to come ready to work. We can only choose 22 boys and 8 girls for the final showcase next month.”
All registered student athletes are required to wear a plain white shirt and black shorts.
The tryout session will be held by the ABFA Technical team.
