Flyers soar, Braves start strong in Division One basketball

Flyers Basketball rebounded from their opening loss to Northside Stingers in Division One of the Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association (ABBA) league on Thursday to easily dismantle Rockersville by 18 points, winning by a 79-61 margin.

Playing at the JSC basketball complex, Flyers were led by newly recruited Cuban player, Esteban Martinez, who had 21 points and eight rebounds off the bench. He had assistance from Kenya Achom with 15 points and Kwame Brathwaite with 10 points.

In a losing effort, Nigel Joseph led Rockersville’s charge with 19 points, while Kevin Joseph added 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds. The loss was Rockersville’s second in as many matches.

Also on Thursday, Baldwin Spencer Braves opened their campaign with a 92-69 triumph over Hometech Systems Outlaws.

Felix Hamilton carried the brunt of the scoring for Braves, sinking 23 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Bernard Andrew assisted with 14 points, while Raji Thomas finished with 12. Outlaws had their best effort come from Ishan Petes who hit 21 points, while Daniel Perez added 19 points and grabbed six rebounds.
