With the annual Carnival festivities being months away, the Central Board of Health (CBH) indicated it will be targeting fete promoters as it enhances its drive to promote food safety in Antigua and Barbuda.

The annual summer festival feature a number of promotional events which prominently feature food and drinks as staples along with the entertainment.

Deputy Chief Health Inspector Daryl Spencer said CBH is there to serve all food handlers, ensuring that they have the necessary tools to effectively serve the public.

“But we’re also here to, and first and foremost, to make sure that the public is given safe food. So I would take this opportunity to reach out to fete promoters more so than ever to ensure that in your mass gathering setting, which is one of the critical areas we’re looking at, to reach out to us (CBH) so that we can assist you in ensuring that you do not have an event or an accident that could ruin your event.

“So, our next group, our next big group of target would be those guys who are organizing fetes who hire quite a lot of food handlers to prepare food for the fete goers. And we want to ensure that when you have three, four, 5,000 persons in a venue, that they serve food that is safe and that we don’t have any great food illness event coming out of any of our fetes,” Spencer said.

He is asking that fete promoters reach out to CBH in order for arrangements to be made for a training session.

Recently, CBH organized a comprehensive food safety training with Chinese restaurant owners and their staff, accommodating them all in one sitting.

“So, to those promoters, if we don’t get to you before your event, reach out to us, 462-2936, and we can work with you to ensure that we all enjoy what Carnival has to offer …

“No, we have not been able to contact them as yet; that’s a group that we have targeted. So that’s something that we’re working on, and we’re hoping that they would reach out to us so that we can have all the stakeholders in one place at one time,” Spencer said.
