Festivals minister reveals price tag for Carnival 2017 launch

The Ministry of National Festivals and Culture has allocated a budget of $270,000 for the launch of the 60th Anniversary of Carnival, Minister EP Chet Greene said yesterday.
The event, carded for Saturday, will kick off on Independence Avenue with a Street Fair at 2 pm. From 6 pm, the public is invited to the Antigua Recreation Ground where a number of performances from several of last year’s winners, such as junior calypso and soca monarchs, calypso monarch, and the groovy and jumpy soca monarchs will be staged.
There will also be performances by East Vibes Steel Orchestra, Lavisount Brass, Highlanders, Xclamation Mas, the Antigua Dance Academy, King Obstinate, King Swallow, and the 2016 Barbuda calypso and soca monarchs.
The Original Burning Flames will close the curtains on the launch activities.
Meanwhile, Minister Greene said he is awaiting a final decision from Cabinet on the budgetary amount to go towards the staging of the 60th anniversary of Antigua & Barbuda’s Carnival.
He told OBSERVER media that “the budget has been prepared but not approved”.
The festival will be celebrated under the theme “Experience Greatness”.
