“I have to get justice. He is a human being,” were the words of Aaron Isaac upon hearing that the man allegedly responsible for the death of his son had been charged with murder.

On Wednesday, police announced that they had arrested and formally charged former prison guard Dwight Rodney Peters, 36, of Ovals, in connection with the death of Ricknaldo Isaac, 26, of Bendals.

Father-of-two Ricknaldo died in May. His death was due to a pulmonary embolism on account of quadriplegia resulting from a spinal cord injury sustained during an altercation at His Majesty’s Prison in late April.

Ricknaldo, who also suffered from epilepsy, had been left paralysed from the waist down and was awaiting surgery at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre when he passed away.

Aaron said his son’s four-year-old daughter keeps asking for her father, but also seems very aware that he has died. He also questioned how his son’s two children will now be cared for, saying, “I want to know how them children getting compensation. How she [his daughter] getting her schooling? What will happen after the death of my son?”

Ricknaldo had been serving a one-year sentence for malicious damage and was set to be released just two months before the fatal incident occurred. The state covered the cost of his burial, and his funeral was held on September 5.

Peters, who had been transferred from the prison shortly after the incident, had reportedly requested a transfer two years earlier. He was taken into police custody on Monday after being prevented from leaving the country. Authorities had issued a stop order against him while investigations continued. Peters had been attempting to travel to St Kitts for a sporting event when he was detained.

He is scheduled to appear before the magistrate’s court today to answer to the charges.
