On October 23 two years ago, two young lives were forever changed when they were mowed down by a vehicle on Friar’s Hill Road.
On the anniversary of the incident, the case surrounding that tragic ordeal took a crucial step forward in the justice system.
Magistrate Dexter Wason committed the case against Karim Edwards, who is charged with causing death by dangerous driving, to the High Court.
The charge stems from the October 23, 2022 incident when Edwards’ vehicle allegedly struck two American University of Antigua students as they crossed Friar’s Hill Road.
Kenneth Mathew, 21, lost his life to severe brain trauma just over a week after the collision.
His fellow student, Priyanjana Das, 19, survived but was left with devastating injuries, including the loss of her right arm, fractures to her left arm, and pelvic injuries.
Throughout the past two years, the case has experienced numerous delays, most notably when the defence, led by attorney Wendel Alexander, unsuccessfully attempted to have the case dismissed through a no case submission.
In yesterday’s proceedings, the prosecution presented key evidence including medical records, police interviews, and an autopsy report.
After reviewing the evidence, Magistrate Wason deemed it sufficient to be sent up to the High Court’s January assizes where, Edwards will be arraigned before a judge.
