Eugene falls short of hundred in draw

BASSETERRE, St Kitts, (CMC) – Captain Johnnel Eugene missed out on a hundred while opener Kimani Melius stroked his second score above fifty in the game, as Windward Islands and Jamaica played to a draw in their second round game in the Regional Under-19 Championship on Sunday.
Trailing by 15 runs after Jamaica racked up 353 all out in their first innings, the Windwards grabbed the chance for batting practice to stroll to 249 for four in their second innings on the final day.
Eugene perished for 96 while Dillon Douglas struck an unbeaten 52 and Melius, 51.
Opener Wayne Edward, who hit a half-century in the first innings, scored a cameo 30 from 31 deliveries in a 40-run first wicket partnership with Melius who made 109 in his first opportunity at the crease.
Melius, who faced 84 balls and counted six fours and a six, put on 40 for the second wicket with Johann Jeremiah (14) before adding a further 34 for the third with Eugene.
Once he departed, Eugene and Douglas dominated, posting an entertaining 135 for the fourth wicket.
The left-handed Eugene hit nine fours and a six off 129 balls in 2-1/2 hours while Douglas struck four boundaries in his 83-ball knock.
Off-spinner Brad Barnes accounted for Eugene to finish with two for 56.
Jamaica had earlier managed to overhaul the Windwards’ first innings of 338 after resuming from their overnight 304 for eight.
This effort was due largely to David Bird (28) and Kristoph Virgo (21) who put on a valuable 43 for the ninth wicket.
