Led by Tariq Benjamin with 53 and Damian Lowenfield with 49, Anderson E Carty Empire Nation cruised to a comfortable five-wicket win over Jennings on Sunday, booking their place in the final of the State Insurance Corporation Super 40 Cricket Competition slated for February 28 at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground.
Benjamin cracked four fours and three sixes for his 53 which came in 60 deliveries, while Lowenfield slammed three fours and two sixes as Empire Nation successfully chased 162 set by the home team in Jennings. There was a contribution of 37 from Kenrick Scott which came in just 16 deliveries and included three fours and three sixes. O Joseph was the pick of the bowlers for the home team with two for five in just 1.2 overs.
Earlier, Jennings were all out for 162 in 39.5 overs after they were put in to bat by the visitors. Orlando Peters hit a top score of 46 while Jedidiah Martin added 26 down the order. Justin Athanaze was the pick of the bowlers for Empire with three wickets for 15 runs in eight overs. There were two wickets each for Mali Richards and Lowenfield.
Athanaze, captain of the Empire Nation team, said the aim was to restrict Jennings to a much lower score.
“Our plan was to restrict them to under 150 but they eventually got 162 but that was good for us because I knew my team could have chased down those runs on any given day. Looking at the pitch [Sunday] and I realised it had a bit of moisture, I spoke to most of my senior players and asked what they thought. They said as long as we won the toss that we should field, but for me, when it comes to final day and I win the toss, I normally bat first but the guys wanted to bowl and so we just went out there and did the job for the team,” he said.
On Saturday, CUB Bethesda Golden Eagles advanced to the final with a seven-wicket triumph over New Winthorpes Lions. Lions made 151 for three in 32 overs with Hilroy Andrew Jr hitting 40 and Ian Eusebe making 36. Bethesda reached their target at 152 for three in 28.1 overs with Gavin Tonge hitting 50 not out.
