Acting Chief Magistrate Dexter Wason is placing drivers on notice that the new demerit point system for drivers in Antigua and Barbuda is in effect.
The government of Antigua and Barbuda introduced a demerit points system as part of its 2024 Vehicles and Road Traffic (Demerit Points) Regulations.
The new system was put in place to promote safer driving practices while ensuring compliance with road safety regulations.
After imposing a $500 fine on a woman who pleaded guilty to careless driving yesterday,Wason, who presides over the Traffic Court, said that due to procedural and logistical issues, the system has not yet been fully implemented.
The magistrate sought to explain that under the new demerit points system drivers, who are convicted for traffic violations, will attract penalty points towards their driver’s licence/driving record.
“There is a grace period now. The law is in place, it’s just for us to implement it. It is going to be a shock when we implement it fully,” Wason said.
The more serious traffic offences will carry higher point values. Collecting 12 demerits within a year could result in license suspension for six months. Eighteen demerits will result in suspension for one year. Some of the most severe infractions, carrying five demerits, include dangerous overtaking maneuvers, and failing to give way to overtaking vehicles.
The government is hoping that this new demerit points system will lead to a reduction in traffic collisions and dangerous driving practices and encourage drivers to take greater responsibility on the country’s roads.
The regulations were gazetted on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
