Director of Education Clare Browne has reaffirmed the Ministry of Education’s dedication to supporting and empowering educators across Antigua and Barbuda on World Teachers Day.
The annual celebration on October 5 serves as a global recognition of teachers’ invaluable contributions to society and education.
This year’s theme, “Valuing teachers’ voices: towards a new social contract for education,” resonated deeply with the Ministry’s vision for the future of education in the twin-island nation.
The Ministry of Education has pledged to renew its social contract with teachers, promising to respond “eloquently” to their voices. Quoting William Shakespeare, Director Browne declared, “Action is eloquence,” signaling a commitment to tangible support for the nation’s educators
Director Browne emphasized the critical role of teachers’ voices in shaping educational policies and practices, stating, “We understand how integral teachers are to the effectiveness of our education system. We know, only too well, the power of teachers’ voices.”
The Director praised the country’s educators for their creativity, passion, and dedication to learner development. He highlighted their commitment to going above and beyond their basic duties, noting that teachers “do much more than they can be paid for, every day, every term, for the entire school year.”
Browne acknowledged the transformative power of educators, asserting that “When teachers speak purposefully with words and/or actions they engender change, they orchestrate progress and they elevate our education system.” This recognition underscores the Ministry’s commitment to not only listening to teachers, but also taking concrete action based on their input.
While celebrating the achievements and influence of teachers, Browne also issued a challenge to all stakeholders in the education system. He called for deep reflection on individual roles in national development, urging educators—both in and out of the classroom—to engage in practices that will advance Antigua and Barbuda and create a brighter future for its children.
The Director acknowledged the challenges faced by educators but encouraged them to persevere, stating, “Let us continue, in spite of the challenges, to take positive action and be the greatest educators we can be.”
As Antigua and Barbuda joins the global community in honouring its teachers, the Ministry of Education’s message serves as a reminder of the profound impact educators have on shaping the nation’s future.
By valuing teachers’ voices and working towards a new social contract in education, the country aims to strengthen its educational system and provide better opportunities for all learners.
The celebration of World Teachers’ Day reflects a broader recognition of the teaching profession’s nobility and its crucial role in securing the nation’s future.
Director Browne expressed his deep appreciation for the dedicated efforts of teachers in shaping the future generation. He also passionately encouraged them to persist in advocating for the protection and advancement of their noble profession, emphasizing its pivotal role in contributing to the overall development and progress of the country.
