The National Parks Authority of Antigua and Barbuda is proud to announce that Ms. Desley Gardner, Heritage Resources Supervisor and Archaeologist, represented the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Antigua Naval Dockyard and Related Archaeological Sites, at the esteemed World Tourism Event 2024.

This event, took from September 12 to 14, 2024, and offered a unique platform for exhibitors to promote World Heritage Sites and is renowned for connecting operators and travellers who are passionate about responsible, sustainable tourism.

The Antigua Naval Dockyard, located within Nelson’s Dockyard National Park, holds significant historical and cultural value. It offers visitors a remarkable blend of rich history, vibrant accommodations, exciting tours, and prestigious yachting events.

The park, already recognized globally for its environmental conservation efforts and heritage preservation projects, was highlighted at this premier event by Ms. Gardner.

Ms. Gardner expressed her excitement about showcasing all facets of the National Park.

“My focus was to promote the diversity within the park, from the historic accommodations at the Copper and Lumber Store Hotel to the various tours and yachting experiences that make our site a unique destination. Our commitment to preserving the environment and safeguarding our rich history is central to the visitor experience, and I am thrilled to be part of this global conversation.”

In addition to her presentation, Ms. Gardner participated in the Sustainable Heritage Tourism Training Workshop on September 12, 2024.

The workshop provided invaluable insights into how heritage sites can continue to attract and engage visitors while maintaining sustainability and preserving their cultural and environmental integrity.

Senator Philip Shoul, Chairman of the National Parks Authority, emphasized the significance of Antigua’s representation at such an international event:

“We are honoured that Ms. Gardner showcased the Antigua Naval Dockyard and our commitment to sustainable tourism at the World Tourism Event. This platform allows us to share our ongoing efforts in environmental conservation and heritage preservation with the world while engaging with professionals dedicated to enhancing the global tourism landscape.”

This event was a key opportunity for professionals and travellers alike to connect, exchange ideas, and enhance the preservation of the world’s most cherished heritage sites.

The National Parks Authority is proud to be part of this significant movement towards more responsible and enriching tourism experiences.
