Representing the Department of Environment, Mr. Garth Simon and Ms. Cathy Thomas recently participated in the closure sessions of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Enabling Gender-Responsive Disaster Recovery, Climate, and Environmental Resilience in the Caribbean (EnGenDER) Project in St. Lucia.

The three-day event marked the conclusion of this impactful five-year initiative, which has significantly enhanced climate and disaster resilience among vulnerable populations, including women, youth, the elderly, and persons with disabilities across several Caribbean islands, including Antigua and Barbuda.

During the sessions, Mr. Simon and Ms. Thomas engaged with regional counterparts to share key lessons learned, assess the project’s impact on beneficiaries, and strategize on next steps to ensure the sustainability of the EnGenDER Project’s initiatives.

Their contributions highlighted Antigua and Barbuda’s commitment to advancing gender-responsive resilience strategies.

A major component of the EnGenDER Project in Antigua and Barbuda, executed by the Department of Environment, involved the distribution of 400-gallon water tanks to vulnerable women and men.

This initiative played a critical role in ensuring that these populations have access to essential resources during disaster events, thereby bolstering their resilience.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, Social Transformation, and the Environment extends its gratitude to Mr. Simon and Ms. Thomas for their dedicated participation and reaffirms its ongoing commitment to fostering climate and disaster resilience within the nation.
