Defending champions in the Anderson Carty Grays Green Football League, Greenbay Hoppers, have advanced to the finals of the competition for the second consecutive year.

Hoppers, playing in the semi-finals on Tuesday afternoon at the King George V Grounds, edged out Bendals FC, 4-3, in what many have been considered the best match of the season.

With goals from Bendals’ Alvah Guishard, Omega Otto and Jahara Hanson, the champions had to come from behind twice in the encounter to win the match.

After a goal from veteran Kendall Pennyfeather, former national striker, Peter “Big Pete” Byers truly put the Greenbay community on his back and scored both the second and equalising third goal for the victors.

It would, however, be former national player, Edlawn O’Garro who would be the hero of the night for Hoppers as he found the back of the net from a penalty kick which was awarded by referee Iroots Appleton late in the second half.

Bendals, who seemingly had the game in hand before the penalty kick, lost two players as they were red-carded after spouting indecent language at the referee.

The semi-finals which first got underway on Sunday had to rescheduled to Tuesday after the lights at the grounds went out.

The finals, which will now see Jennings battling Hoppers, will take place tonight at 6:30 pm.
