Defending champions suffer first loss

Defending Mixed League champions, Invincible Stars, suffered their first defeat in the 2019 season of the Antigua and Barbuda Netball Association (ABNA) League on Sunday night.

Playing at the YMCA Sports Complex, Invincible Stars went under to Rainforest Elites 37-29.

Despite Kareem “Macky” Edwards sinking 22 of his 33 attempts, the champions could not get over the hump.

Carl “Stamalan” Kirby assisted scoring seven of his 11 in a losing effort.

Veteran player, Randy Frederick, led the victors sinking 33 of his 36 attempts while teammate Jamila Fritz netted four of her eight.

Newbies, Michael Burton Fly Ballers joined Elites in the winner’s circle as they recorded a 29-7 victory over Roof Masters Attackers.

Lincoln Weekes sank 16 of his 26 attempts for the victors while teammate, Daniel Perez, banked 13 of 20.

Attackers’ Shenique Farrell scored four of her seven while Allessa Richards netted three of seven.

Meanwhile in the lone Open division match-up, Massy United Grays Green recorded their first win of the season, thrashing Invincible Stars 2B 38-19.

National senior player, Tyea Ladoo, had 24 of her 36 attempts with assistance from Adina Andre who made 14 of her 24.

Mary Jane Grant was the leading scorer for Invincible Stars sinking 13 of her 18.

Teammates Kizzy Hughes and Kemeesha Williams also contributed as Hughes made four of 12 and Williams, 2 of seven.

Matches will continue on Tuesday night at 6:45 in the Open division as Massy United Grays Green will battle Chuke’s Trucking Fly Ballers while at 7 Old Road will face Invincible Stars B.

In the feature encounter at 8:05, Hon Michael Browne Black Lightning will play Invincible Stars A.

All matches will be played at the YMCA Sports Complex.
