Despite threats posed by some artistes to boycott Carnival, the Quarter and Semi-Finals are slated to begin next month without a hitch.

Yesterday, the Antigua Barbuda Festivals Commission (ABFC) issued a release detailing the dates that have been set for the Quarter and Semi-Finals for this year’s soca and calypso monarch competitions.

The ABFC announced that quarterfinals will begin on Monday July 1st with the Party Monarch Groovy artistes and the Jumpy Party Monarch Quarterfinals will follow the next day, Tuesday 2nd July.

The Calypso Monarch Quarterfinals will take place on Friday 12th July and Saturday 13th while the Semi-Finals will commence on Sunday 21st July.

The press release also stated that the Junior Soca Monarch elimination is slated for Monday 15th July and the Junior Calypso Monarch Elimination will be on Tuesday 16th July.

All of these preliminary competitions – with the exception of Party Monarch semi-finals – will be held at the Barrymore Hotel on Fort Road.

The highly anticipated Party Monarch semi-finals will take place on Monday, 22nd July at the Antigua Recreation Grounds.

Just a few weeks ago, the reigning Junior Calypso Monarch, Tyreke “King Vicious” Lewis, came forward reportedly speaking out on behalf of his fellow competitors in this year’s Junior Soca and Calypso Competition.

They reportedly threatened to abstain from preparing for their respective competitions if they did not receive money owed to them.

Soon after, OBSERVER media received word that cheques had been prepared for a list of 10 Junior artistes. (Latrishka Thomas)
