The Mandy Premier League (MPL) organisers received high praises from the public and participants after the successful hosting of the All-Star Cricket match between the MPL All Stars and the Good Morning JoJo Media team.
The match was a fundraising event to help the families of Danny Benjamin and Derrick “Pretty-boy” Edwards who both remain in Jamaica awaiting trial for drug related charges. Benjamin and Edwards, who were a part of the coaching staff of the men’s senior football team, the Benna Boys, were arrested at the Norman Manley International airport in Jamaica in March after nearly four rounds of cannabis were uncovered in one of the equipment bags.
The fundraising match, which was played last Thursday at the Powell’s playing field, featured local sporting and media personalities such as Jack Matthew, Neto Baptiste and Baldwin “Spliff” Anthony and a contingent of top players from the MPL.
Despite losing the match by three runs, captain of the Media team, Joseph “Jojo” Apparicio commended the organisers of the event and personally thanked everyone who supported the cause, including members of the Antigua and Barbuda Softball Cricket Association (ABSCA) who were present and donated to the families.
A number of prizes were also won by by-standers such as Cillicia Merchant of Willikies and Leroy Jno-Baptiste who went home with a 28’’ and 32’’ flat-screen television sets respectively. The donation of the sets came courtesy of COURTS and Cool and Smooth. “We know the situation and we just wanted to assist in anyway possible.
Two of the guys also played cricket and are role models for many persons, so we knew we had to do something,” said Mandy Weathered, head organiser. “We just want to thank Cool and Smooth, COURTS, members of the Media and MPL All-Star teams, Kathy Payne and the Bullets Club, Vincey Bowen, the ABSCA, Rachael Greeves, Shenika Williams and Menova Govia for jumping on board to assist in what was truly a worthy cause.”
