The four men who allegedly opened fire on a policeman while escaping a house break-in, were remanded to prison pending their committal.

Andrey Joseph, 23, of George Street; Coteen Francis, 25, of Federation Road; George Chiddick, 28, of George Street; and Shorn Charles, 28, of Tindale Road, appeared in the St. John’s Magistrate Court on three charges.

Their committal date was set for July 18.

They are accused of shooting at Corporal Jeffrey Benjamin with intent to murder.

The other two charges are for allegedly breaking into the home of Onika Simon of Creekside, and stealing a quantity of gold and silver jewellery, including bracelets and earrings valued at $2,700.

At the time of the alleged break-in and theft, Simon was at work and received a call informing her that several individuals were on her property.

Corporal Benjamin, her neighbour, who was at home, saw the four strangers in the yard around 11:45 a.m. and went to investigate.

Upon coming face to face with the intruders, one of them fired two shots at him and the officer returned fire.

However, the suspects scaled a fence and escaped into the nearby bushes.

When Simon returned to her property she found it ransacked and several pieces of her jewellery missing.

Investigators discovered the point of forced entry and slippers they believe belonged to one of the suspects, along with other bits of evidence.
