Leeward Islands and West Indies A cricketer, Rahkeem Cornwall, believes that with consistency, Antigua & Barbuda can emerge as victors of the Leeward Islands Cricket Board’s (LICB) 50 overs Competition slated to bowl off here on Friday.
The all-rounder, who represents the Liberta Blackhawks in the domestic programme, also believes that the youthfulness of the team could be a plus.
“We have a young crop of guys and I am not saying winning is everything but we just have to go and do our best. We have guys that can play the game so we just have to go and play good cricket and if we do that, I think we have a good chance,” he said.
Antigua & Barbuda will take on Combined Islands in Liberta on Friday as they seek to open their campaign on a good note.
Cornwall was also one of the most successful bowlers and batsmen for the Leeward Islands Hurricanes in both the Regional Super50 and the recently concluded 4-Day competition.
The player believes, however, that the sub-regional squad could have done better had they maintained the early runs they had in the competitions.
“We think we started well and then maybe a little bit of habit started creeping back into the cricket. I think we ended off on a high by beating Guyana and I think that for the upcoming season we just have to do the simple things right and we will be more successful in this tournament,” he said.
The Antiguan will also charter new territory when the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) bowls off on August 1 as he will represent the St Lucia Stars for the first time. He previously represented the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots and before that, the now dormant Antigua Hawksbill.
“The team looks like a positive set of guys, so I am just going to do my best and see what I can do for the St Lucia Stars. I am still trying to be more confident and more positive with the bat so probably I can go up the order,” the cricketer said.
Cornwall is set to lead Antigua & Barbuda in the LICB competition starting Friday.
