Staff at the Antigua and Barbuda Broadcasting Service (ABS) will receive information regarding the construction of a new facility in the upcoming weeks.
During the weekly post-Cabinet press briefing on Friday, the Minister of Information, Broadcasting, Telecommunications & Information Technology, Melford Nicholas, said the framework for the construction project would be presented within the coming month.
“Once we are back to normal and I can get the management to focus on the development challenge ahead, over the next four to six weeks we will be presenting to the staff the framework of the construction of that facility so they can look forward to the best working conditions,” he said.
ABS staff protested on two separate occasions over a number of issues including scheduling concerns, poor air circulation within the building; lack of adequate lighting in the bathrooms, editing room and sales department; and unpaid overtime.
However, one major issue that remains unresolved for protesting staff is the continuation of Erna-Mae Brathwaite as General Manager of ABS.
During the protests, the workers repeatedly called for Brathwaite to be fired. However Nicholas made clear that this was one demand he would not entertain.
“A number of persons believed that they had an interest in seeing the removal of the general manager, but this is something that I have indicated to the staff that this was the right of the ministry, and [we] had no interest in entertaining [it],” Nicholas said.
