This week, as we observe the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) on December 3rd, we are reminded of the transformative power of inclusion. The theme for 2024, “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future,” emphasises the importance of empowering individuals with disabilities to lead in shaping a world that values accessibility, equity, and sustainability.
At Good Humans 268 Inc, this mission is at the heart of our work. Guided by the principle, “Necessary for some, useful for all”, our Blueprint for an Inclusive Future outlines ambitious goals designed to create a society where individuals with disabilities are not just included but empowered to thrive. This 10-15-year vision focuses on accessibility, education, environmental stewardship, and economic opportunities for individuals with disabilities in Antigua and Barbuda. You can read the full document on our website to understand how each initiative builds toward this future.
A cornerstone of our efforts is the Project Red initiative, which aims to make schools accessible to students with disabilities. By encouraging community members to donate as little as $1 monthly, Project Red aspires to transform seven schools annually over seven years. It’s a call for collective responsibility—a small act multiplied by thousands to create monumental change.
Additionally, our work prioritises environmental sustainability, as seen in the Student Community Service Program. This program teaches students to become environmental stewards by recycling, tree planting, and volunteering. Since 2023, students have recycled hundreds of thousands of plastic bottles and cans, planted trees, and volunteered thousands of hours to improve their communities. These efforts not only benefit the environment but also raise awareness of the links between disability inclusion and climate action.
“Inclusion is not simply a matter of infrastructure—it’s about creating spaces where everyone can contribute. As Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Inspired by this sentiment, we continue to create opportunities for individuals with disabilities to lead, participate, and innovate. Our BOSS Adventures eco-tourism project, for example, showcases Antigua and Barbuda’s beauty through accessible, engaging tours managed by and catering to individuals with disabilities.
Through programs like these, we are not only transforming lives but also challenging misconceptions about what people with disabilities can achieve. By fostering leadership, creativity, and self-reliance, we are amplifying the voices of those who have historically been marginalized.
Of course, creating a truly inclusive future requires overcoming challenges. From logistical delays to funding constraints, every project demands persistence and adaptability. Yet, every obstacle reminds us why this work is essential. As highlighted in the Blueprint for an Inclusive Future, small acts of resilience—whether it’s a school installing accessible restrooms or a student planting a tree—have ripple effects that extend far beyond their immediate impact.
Our recycling programs, for instance, face challenges such as theft of bins and inconsistent engagement. However, by addressing these issues with creative solutions like educational workshops and student competitions, we continue to foster long-term environmental and social change.
The call to action this year is clear: Inclusion is everyone’s responsibility. Here are some ways you can get involved: Support Project Red: By donating $1 a month, you can help transform schools into accessible spaces. Volunteer: Join our clean-up drives, tree-planting activities, or mentorship programs. Advocate: Share stories of inclusion and raise awareness about disability rights in your community. Partner with Us: Businesses and organizations can collaborate with Good Humans 268 Inc. to expand the impact of our initiatives.
As we reflect on the IDPD theme, let us remember that leadership begins with each of us. By supporting inclusive initiatives, we create a stronger, more resilient society. Together, we can amplify the leadership of individuals with disabilities, ensuring their voices shape the future.
In the words of disability advocate Judith Heumann: “Disability only becomes a tragedy when society fails to provide the things we need to lead our lives—job opportunities or barrier-free buildings, for example. It is not a tragedy to me that I’m living in a wheelchair.” Let us rise to the occasion and turn this vision of inclusion into reality.
Good Humans 268 Inc. invites you to join us in making 2024 a year of hope, action, and transformation. Let’s work together to build a future that is truly inclusive and sustainable.
