Bodybuilding judge, Errol Williams, has backed Antigua & Barbuda’s seven-member team to excel at this month’s Central American & Caribbean (CAC) Championships in Mexico.
Speaking on the Good Morning Jojo Sports Show this week, Williams, who is also chief judge for the CAC, said all seven athletes selected to represent the twin island state at the annual event have the potential to medal in their various weight classes.
“I think it’s the strongest team we have ever put together because I think all seven should make it to the top three in their class and this is based on what I have seen so far this year at other competitions,” he said.
National champion Kenny Jacobs leads the Antigua & Barbuda team which also includes Orson Martin, Ollyn Martin, Elvis Bailey, Bernard Percival, Kimberly Ephraim and Sher-Rhonda Braithwaite to the championships in Mexico from September 28 to October 1.
Asked why lone women’s physique competitor Wendy Tittle was overlooked, Williams said the athlete is not ready for the level of competition at the CAC.
“We don’t think that she would be competitive and that’s the bottom line. It was explained to her and for how many years now, we have been letting the athletes know that even though you win your class at nationals it is not an automatic selection on the team, you have to be competitive in the category you will be competing in at CAC,” he said.
According to the chief judge, some of the selected athletes could also find themselves in classes other than the ones they dominated here during the nationals.
“We have to understand that our classes here are different to the CAC classes and that means that a lightweight here goes up to as much as 175/6 pounds and in CAC the lightweight is up to 154 so somebody in lightweight here won’t necessarily going into lightweight at CAC. They would probably going into maybe welterweight,” Williams said.
The seven-member team and officials are slated to leave for Mexico on September 23.
