Team Antigua and Barbuda girls, the Under-12 International Tennis Federation (ITF) Central American and Caribbean Tennis Federation (COTECC) champions’ hope of securing a second consecutive crown on Thursday came to a sudden end.
The ladies suffered their first defeat in the round two matches at the ongoing tournament at the National Racquet Centre in Tacarigua, falling to Trinidad and Tobago ‘A’ team in all three matches.
Number-two-seeded, Ariel Kelsick, went under in straight sets, 2-6, 4-6 to Zara Ghuran while Brasha Dyer, number-one-seeded player also lost in straight sets to Cameron Wong, 3-6, 2-6.
Dyer and Kelsick then teamed up in their doubles bout to battle Wong and Jordane Dookie but could not record their first win of the day losing, 0-6, 6-7 with a 5-7 tie break.
The agony continued for Team Wadadli as the boy’s team were also knocked out from a top two finish as they lost all three matches to Trinidad and Tobago.
Both Xaveek Toppin and Jaydon Marcano went under in straight sets.
Toppin was defeated 3-6, 3-6 to Luca Denon while Trinidad’s Jaylon Chapman handed Jaydon Marcano a 2-6, 2-6 trouncing.
Toppin and Marcano later partnered in their doubles encounter but could not find themselves in the winner’s circle falling, 2-6, 3-6 in straight sets.
The girls team will face off Trinidad’s ‘B’ team while the boys will battle Curacao later this week.
