Champions in the men’s and women’s marquee event at this year’s Cool & Smooth Track & Field Championships slated for June 29-30, will walk away with more than just medals and trophies.

This is according to Second Vice President of the Antigua and Barbuda Athletics Association (ABAA), Shawnor Charles Joseph, who said winners in the men’s and women’s 100 meters finals will, for the first time in the championship’s history, receive monetary prizes.

“There is going to be a prize money for the 100 meters male champion and the 100 meters female champion. For the female champion, it is going to be $1000 to be sponsored by Mr Anton Tonge and the male champions will also get $1000 and it is sponsored by Alzarri Joseph,” she said.

Meet director and also a member of the athletics association, Kesswin Anthony, said there is outside interests by athletes hoping to compete in the two-day event at the YASCO Sports Complex.

“So far, Montserrat has reached out, St Vincent has reached out as well as St Kitts. The St Kitts nationals was also this weekend so once they get done with that they will indicate to us. Our portal for registration is open and it closes on the 24th of June so it’s still about two weeks away. Closer to the meet you normally get an influx of people showing the interest to come but so far, St. Kitts has shown interest as well as St. Kitts and St Vincent,” he said.

With top athletes like Cejhae Greene, Ajani Daley, Joella Lloyd, La’Nica Locker, Geolyna Dowdye, Tyra Fenton and Maliek Francis all set to compete at the nationals, Anthony is anticipating intense rivalries throughout.

He said the event will start with an opening ceremony slated for 2:30 pm on June 29.

“On the first day, we usually have our pinnacle event which is the 100 meters but we will start at 3:00 pm with the shot-put as well as the high jump. This will be followed by the 400 meters, male and female heats at 3:10 and 3:18 pm to be followed by the triple-jump at 3:35 pm. I am looking to see of Taeco O’Garro will make a special appearance to come and compete. We have the 100 meters heats which goes off at 4:00 pm in the men and women and then we are going to the javelin women at 4:30 pm and then we go into the 1500 meters at 4:40 and 5:00 pm,” the meet director said.

Adults will pay $20 while children under the age of 12 years will pay $10 for entry on both days. There will also be a VIP section for which patrons could purchase tickets for $150.
