Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as Liberal Party leader on Monday morning. While stepping down from party leadership, Trudeau will remain prime minister until a successor is chosen.

The decision comes amid multiple challenges, including threatened tariffs from Donald Trump, the recent resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, and polls showing the Liberal Party trailing the Conservative Party by over 20 points.

The opposition Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, are favoured to win in the upcoming general election, which must be held by October 20.

Trudeau, who has led the Liberal Party for 11 years and served as prime minister for nine, rose to power in 2015 on a progressive platform. However, recent years have been marked by growing economic discontent among Canadians.

His resignation announcement came during a news conference at 10:45 AM ET on Monday.
