Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the late Dane Hamilton Sr, a distinguished lawyer and King’s Counsel, who died at Sir Lester Bird Medical Center on Monday afternoon.
In a tribute to Hamilton’s exceptional contributions to the legal field, Sir Steadroy highlighted the profound impact the late attorney had on the legal landscape of Antigua and Barbuda. “The Bar Association should strongly consider establishing a program or some form of honour in recognition of this great man,” Sir Steadroy stated. “He will be surely missed by me, my government, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him. I extend my deepest condolences to his wife, family, and all those who mourn his loss. May he rest in peace.”
Sir Steadroy further commended Hamilton’s outstanding professionalism and dedication to the law, saying: “Dane Hamilton KC was a lawyer of great integrity, known for representing his clients with distinction. He was one of the first individuals to graduate from the University of the West Indies, and his expertise in criminal law made him a leading figure in that field. He also served with distinction as a judge in the Court of Appeal.”
Reflecting on Hamilton’s legacy, Sir Steadroy added, “He exemplified qualities that every young lawyer should aspire to—punctuality, meticulous research, and thorough preparation for his cases. He made sure that when he went to court, he was fully prepared. His loss is deeply felt by all who had the honour of knowing him.”
The Attorney General also emphasized that the Bar Association would be asked to find a meaningful way to honour the memory of the distinguished lawyer.
Throughout his remarkable career, Hamilton was not only a revered legal practitioner but also a mentor to countless young lawyers, imparting his wisdom and guidance to the next generation of legal professionals. His unwavering commitment to justice, combined with his significant contributions to the Caribbean legal community, has left an indelible mark.
