At least two major sporting events will be affected by news that the country has recorded its first case of the Coronavirus.
Football and basketball have both confirmed that their ongoing domestic competitions will be placed on hold “until further notice” following request from the country’s Ministry of Sports that large gatherings be avoided.
General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association (ABFA), Rohan Hector, and President of the Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association (ABBA), Kebra Nanton, both confirmed that there will be no further matches in their competitions pending further instructions from the ministry.
The football association’s Premier Division competition was set to climax over the next two weekends with key match ups in both the promotion and demotion races while in basketball, key fixtures were also set for Saturday and Sunday at the JSC basketball complex.
President of the Antigua and Barbuda Cricket Association (ABCA), Leon Rodney, has however said their competition will continue as normal, adding that they have not heard from the ministry. He added however that they will adhere to any directive coming out of the sports ministry.
