Former Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association (ABBA) Division 1 champions, Hon. Baldwin Spencer Braves, got off to a great start in their 2019 campaign with a 65-54 victory over Yorks Crushers on Thursday night at the JSC Sports Complex.
Overseas-based player Brian Holmes made his debut in the league with a 20-point, seven steals performance to lead the west-side team to victory.
He was assisted by another new addition to the team, Devorn Benjamin, who netted 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds and made four steals.
National player Cohen DeSouza had 19 points and 12 rebounds for Crushers, while teammate, Olivee Morris sank 17 points in a losing effort.
Freetown Travelers showed why they are still in the race with an impressive 81-72 triumph over HomeTech Systems Outlaws.
The feature match of the double header evening saw Humroy Wright score a season high 31 points. Wright, who once held the record for the most three-pointers in a single game, also grabbed six rebounds.
Former national players Teon Joseph and Morlon “Little” Davis chipped in sinking 20 and 13 points respectively.
Outlaws’ Jason London had 22 points, six rebounds and five assists, while teammates Kevin “Pumpkin” Roberts and Ishaan Peets netted 16 and 14 points in a losing effort.
Games will continue tonight at the JSC Sports Complex at 6:45 p.m. as Rebels will face Freetown Travelers, while at 8:30 p.m. Potters Steelers will battle Yorks Crushers.
