Acting Manager at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Keithroy Black, is describing efforts to keep the surroundings at the North Sound venue clean as a challenge, adding that the venue does not have the necessary manpower to conduct daily cleanup activities on the outside.

“When they come onboard, which is National Solid Waste, when they head in this direction they would normally come around the stadium but the last time they did not. We are hoping to have some additional guys added; we have nine grounds men so we do not have the full manpower to do everything inside and outside of the stadium. Again, National Solid Waste normally comes around and help us … the minister [Daryll Matthew] and Senator Shenella Govia who is now responsible for sports, gave the assurance they would have been able to get that done. They have not done so as yet but I do believe it will be done,” he said.

His statement comes amidst recent concerns over the littered surroundings of the venue frequently used by fitness enthusiasts and exercise groups.

Black said members of the public must also play their part by securing their waste when leaving the stadium.

“We are asking persons who walk around or drive around and yes, they complain about the grass, but every time we have to go outside the very same stadium, it is the very same people who complain and they take their water bottle and everything and they would just throw them against the fence so when we go out there you’re talking about 15 to 20 bags of garbage,” he said.

“We have a plan in place that when we get the additional guys we will assign two of them as their daily duties is to maintain the fence line go right around from gate one and back because we can’t continue to be dependent on Solid Waste because I understand that it is not stadium alone they work, they work through the island so we have to find a way to deal with our stuff,” he added.

Work is currently ongoing at the stadium as the country prepares to host ODI matches in the England vs. West Indies Christmas Series later this year.
