The Antigua & Barbuda Tennis Association (ABTA) get ready for what is set to be a busy month for it’s junior members.
Dianne Hillhouse, public relations officer of the association, said there are several upcoming events in the month of August.
“This month is generally one of the most active months for our junior players. They generally travel to St Lucia — we have some under 18 and under 14 traveling on Friday to take part in the Coca Cola ITF championships, then on to St Vincent for the SVGITF then to Trinidad for the Tobago ITF. Basically, they will go from island to island for three tournaments that last one week each,” Hillhouse said.
She added that two female U12 players will be traveling to Trinidad on the 8th of August to participate in the Sub-region 4 training camp. These players were selected from across the Caribbean and Central America and will receive couching from an International Tennis Federation professional who will guide them in matters such as time management as they move on to the U14 category.
Hillhouse also highlighted that Sibley Charley, Brasha Dyer and Samaar Davis will be traveling to Guatemala on the 19th to take part in the U12 team championship finals having been successful at the sub-region 4 team championships. In this tournament they will meet up against Curacao.
If successful in Guatemala the young ladies will move on to the Confederation of Tennis in South America and will play the youth world championships in Bolivia.
She also explained that even if the players are not successful in the various tournaments, the experience itself will be instrumental in building both personal and athletic skills.
