The Women’s Senior football team, the Benna Girls, topped Group D in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women’s Qualifiers over the weekend.
The Benna Girls, after defeating Curacao 2-1 on Friday night at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket stadium, trounced Guadeloupe 3-0 on Sunday to sail to an untouchable six points.
Overseas based player, Kai Jacobs led the charge for the Benna Girls on Sunday scoring a penalty in the 28th minute and once again in the 64th.
The other goal came from Portia Davis, another overseas based player, in the 49th.
Both of them also scored in their previous match on Friday.
Coach of the Benna Girls, Vincent “Nabu” Samuel praised the women on an impressive showing despite the odds.
“I must commend the girls on buying into the philosophy and just really playing hard each game. You know Portia really showed her experience on the field and captained the cause and of course there was Kai who was really on par in terms of scoring. The quality is there in our girls.”
Samuel, who did not have an impressive run at Empire Football Club, also thanked the Technical Director, Rolston “Debu” Williams, the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) and his coaching staff for giving him the opportunity and support.
Despite a great showing, Samuel said there is still a lot of work to be done in preparation for the next leg of the tournament against teams such as St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Curacao.
“We will give the players a two-day break and return to training on Wednesday. This is now where some other additions, over-seas based will be implemented into the team as we prepare for the next leg and in long term the CONCACAF Caribbean tournament.”
