Benna Girls suffer first loss

The Antigua and Barbuda Senior Women’s team, the Benna Girls, suffered a disappointing loss in their opening bout of the 2020 Women’s Olympic Qualifiers in Trinidad on Wednesday.

Playing at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Group A of the Caribbean leg, the Benna Girls were trounced by the home team, 5-0.

Nia Walcott got the Soca Princesses off to a 1-0 start as early as the 13th minute of play while a penalty-kick in added time of the first half by Karyn Forbes pushed the lead to 2-0.

The heat continued by the Trinidadian team as Forbes recorded her second goal of the tournament in the 74th minute, while teammate Aaliyah Prince rounded off the barrage of goals in the 89th.

Trinidad and Tobago now extend their position at the top of the standings with six points after two matches, while the Benna Girls are in 4th still without a point after one match.

The Dominican Republic were also victorious in Group A matches that day with a 3-0 win over Aruba.

They now move to second on the five-team standings with four points, while Aruba are in 5th.

The Benna Girls will gear up to play the Dominican Republic today at 2:30 pm.

Only the top team from each group will move on to the next round.
