Basketball association jump-starts Under-19 preparations

Months ahead of the Leeward Islands Basketball Association Under-19 Tournament slated for August 14-18 in St Maarten, the Antigua & Barbuda Basketball Association (ABBA) has announced a training squad in preparation for the event.
The list comprises Tavarus Benta, Mico Scotland, Kellony Tonge, Anthony Greer, Tyler Jacobs, Teyon Lake, Cairon Davis, Delornje Jules, Ezekiel Francois, Jabari Williams, Damani Edwards and Tyreke Lewis.
Also included are Victor Horsford, Najee George, Chance Lewis, Lincoln Weekes, Javon Simon, Alexis Jackson, Danny Perez, Daniel Perez, Ahmani Browne, Sheldon Gomes Jr, Eric Joseph Jr, Raymond Hillhouse, Judah Ferris and Michael Burton.
Rounding off the selections are Amar Bird, Delonte Phillip, Jevonte Valerie, Tehran Zachariah, Jamie Robinson, Christopher Khouly, Vladimir Castro, Shemar Joseph and Daysher Samuel.
A meeting that convened last Friday with the  ABBA’s Youth Development Committee spearheaded by First Vice President, Carlton Brodie, sought to introduce the players and their parents/guardians to the coaching and management staff.
Former national player, Mahijah Davis was named the team’s head coach, and will be assisted by Cedric David. The team’s technical director is basketball icon, Carl Knight, and the manager is Oleno Knight, and she will be assisted by Marlon Charles.
President of ABBA, Daryll Matthew expressed commendations to the young men on being selected and urged them to work hard as they each vie for a spot on the country’s national team.
He added that special attention would be paid to those who displayed not only exceptional basketball skills, but also good discipline and work ethics.
“It is the vision of the association to produce ‘Good People’, who society respects, and not just good basketball players,” Matthew said.
Antigua & Barbuda placed third in the last LIBA Under-19 Tournament held in Montserrat in 2015.
