Baron and Choy claim male and female prizes in ABWU Road Race

Kohart Baron of Team Terminix and Telesha Choy of Vipers were the male and female winners in the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union (ABWU) 56th Anniversary Invitational Road Race held Sunday.

Baron clocked 2:39.18 (two hours, 39 minutes and 18 seconds) to finish ahead of a tough Elite Male category and claim the top podium position.

Jeffery Kelsick of Team Pillars Cycling, finished in 2:43.24 (two hours, 43 minutes and 24 seconds) to grab the silver medal spot while Dave Garret of Vipers was third in a time of 2:43.25 (two hours, 43 minutes and 25 seconds).

Veterans Robert Marsh (2:43.26) and Delroy Carty (2:47.08) out of Anguilla were fourth and fifth respectively.

Meanwhile, Choy pedalled away with the female title and prize money, having being the lone competitor in her division. She registered a time of 2:59.20 to complete the 56 miles event.

There was action as well in the Junior Male category with Tahje Browne (2:43.27) and Jahiem Telemaque (3:15.45), both of Wadadli Cycling Academy, taking the top two positions.

Damaine Williams (3:31.47) of Team Terminix and Jayonte Joseph (4:06.04) of Wadadli Cycling Academy, were third and fourth respectively.

In the Sports Class, Marcos Ozuna (3:23.26) of Little Rascals, Craig Joseph (3:46.57) of Road Runners Cycling Club and Joel Griffith (3:49.52) of Little Rascals, were first, second and third respectively.

There was strong competition in the Masters Class as well but Edward Henry of the Andre Simon Cycling Academy, proved too much for the other competitors as he pedaled to victory in a time of 3:07.04.

Micah Gore (3:07.31) and Ken Jackson (3:11.48), both from the Road Runners Cycling Club, finished second and third respectively.

Meanwhile, Aiden Tonge of East Side Raiders was the lone competitor in the Cadets Class as he registered a time of 2:44.24.

A total of 28 cyclists took part in the event with appearances by overseas registrants Delroy and DaronCarty from Anguilla, Kohath Baron from Dominica and Dave Garrett from Ohio, USA.

During the prize giving ceremony, a monetary presentation was made to a representative of the Simon family, in aid of the Andre Simon’s medical fund. Also, in a gesture of good faith the three podium finishers in the Elite category donated some of their prize monies to Andre Simon.
