Summer is finally here guys! As we’re in the heart of one of the greatest times of the year where youth exploration is concerned, some of the vacation time can be spent unlocking potential and earning a few dollars. It is always fitting to be engaged constructively in your community, and a competition says it all.

BarbudanGO will be hosting an essay writing and oratorical competition which will take place on August 12 in recognition of International Youth Day. This day is one of the United Nations’ designated days whose purpose is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth and bringing youth issues to the attention of the international community and celebrating the potential of youth as partners in today’s global society.

We are living in an era where our youths are facing a number of challenges which range from climate change to socioeconomic issues. However, barbudanGO offers the platform for them to have a voice to speak on issues that pose a great threat to the young people in the community.

Education is one of the richest gifts to mankind, and we at barbudanGO believe that great impacts can be made when knowledge is being shared and exchanged. Intergenerational solidarity is key; as we’ve learned from the past, we better prepare for our future.

BarbudanGO believe strongly in bringing to light the issues that require immediate attention. The organisation stands firmly on five pillars of community, which are culture, history, education, environmental preservation and disaster mitigation (CHEED).

Participants in the upcoming essay writing and oratorical competition will be required first to identify a problem or issue affecting them or other youths within the community of Barbuda. They will then propose a programme to be implemented under one of barbudanGO’s five pillars of community to address the problem identified.

The next step will be to write an essay (500-800 words) addressing the actual problem, and then lastly they will present their piece to a panel of judges who will then determine the winner. A grand monetary prize will be offered to the winner, so you have to be in it to win it.

We want to hear from our young people. This is an opportunity for various issues to be highlighted and brought to the attention of the leading agents in the communities. Governments, churches, schools, NGOs, community groups etc play a pivotal role in creating spaces for youths so they can strive and have access to the necessary tools and resources to further their development.

Persons interested in taking part can reach out to Ridge Taylor at 781-8734 or Brandon Walker at 721-2535. A registration form will be provided and the window will be open until July 29 2023. For more information email us at [email protected].

At the end of it all, remember, we are making an impact with CHEED.
