SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (CMC) – Antigua and Barbuda were eliminated from contention in the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship on Thursday when they lost their third straight game to finish the preliminary round with little to show for their efforts.
Playing in Group A at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa against the also previously winless Canada, Antigua succumbed to goals from England-based winger Kris Twardek and Shaan Hundal in either half, to wrap up their unflattering maiden outing in the competition.
They finished bottom of the group as Mexico topped the standings with nine points after completing a perfect preliminary round outing with a 1-0 win over Honduras in the feature game.
Honduras finished second with six points.
Following heavy defeats to Mexico and Honduras, Antigua’s hopes of finishing with a consolation win were quickly dashed.
They fell behind in the 23rd minute when Twardek volleyed home a rebound from close range after Hundal’s initial header was denied by the woodwork.
Antigua trailed 1-0 at the break and almost conceded another in the 52nd but Liam Fraser’s shot was again thwarted by the woodwork, as Canada suffered more frustration.
They were forced to wait until the dying moments again to double their lead when Hundal latched onto a superb pass from Tristan Borges to beat custodian Christian Corbett from just inside the 18-yard box.
