Pammie Tyson, step-mother of Antiguan Olympian Tiger Tyson, is on the verge of completing an extraordinary trans-Atlantic rowing challenge, the World’s Toughest Row, as she approaches the Nelsons’s Dockyard alongside teammate Nia Baylis. The duo, rowing as team LightShip, is expected to make landfall between February 2nd and 3rd, 2025.

Tyson, representing both Antigua and the UK in this ambitious venture, has been navigating the Atlantic waters in an R25 boat, demonstrating remarkable endurance and determination. As of January 26th, the team was positioned at 17° 32.95 N, 054° 58.19 W, with 390.4 nautical miles remaining to their destination, having covered an impressive 63 nautical miles in the previous 24 hours.

The pair currently holds impressive standings in multiple categories: 29th among all boats in the competition, 8th in the pair classification, and 5th in the women’s class, maintaining a steady speed of 2.5 knots.

Their journey carries special significance beyond the physical challenge, as both rowers have personal connections to kidney-related health issues. The team is raising awareness and funds for multiple causes, including Kidney Wales, Epilepsy Action, and Antigua’s Elkhorn Marine Conservancy.

For Tyson, whose son Tiger represented Antigua in kiteboarding at the 2024 Paris Olympics, this Atlantic crossing represents another chapter in her family’s sporting achievements. The mother-son duo has now both competed at elite levels in their respective water sports, showcasing Antigua and Barbuda’s growing presence in international sports.

As LightShip approaches Antigua’s shores, their mission embodies their team motto of pushing beyond perceived limits to achieve the extraordinary, while supporting vital causes that affect both their local and global communities.
