Under the theme,”Embracing the journey of service creating our legacy of change”, the Antigua Lions Club celebrated its 56th anniversary of service to the people of Antigua and Barbuda with a host of activities to include Media Day, Honk for the Anniversary at the Roundabout, and a Sunset Cruise.

After the church service on October 14, the club, along with the District Governor, Lion Alan Alexander PMJF, delivered food packages to the ‘Care Project’.

According to a release, the Lions of Antigua is a prestigious charity organisation that is a part of a global network of over 48,000 clubs with 1.4 million members that are committed to helping those in need all over the world.

The club, which was officially established on October 14, 1968, currently has 76 members. Over the past 56 years, it has successfully completed numerous service initiatives to include free eyeglasses and vision screenings in both primary and secondary schools throughout the island as well as in Barbuda, which was done in conjunction with the New York-based Barbudan Network Society.

Also, in collaboration with Dr Dwayne “Baba” Thwaites Bio Health Laboratory and their medical staff more than 800 men are screened for prostate cancer each year. Additionally, families in need of immediate medical aid, both domestically and overseas, receive financial support. Every week, the club members provide hot meals for about 30 people, and food packages are given to individuals or families who are in urgent need of help.

Additionally, the Antigua Lions collaborate with the Diabetes Association and Breast Friends to support their events.

The annual Thanksgiving Takeaway Dinner, Wine and Tappas event, and the Golf Tournament are just a few of the cooperative relationships and fundraising events that enable the club to provide its services.

“Every action we perform, no matter how minor, contributes to a greater whole. As we embark on this adventure, we are considering the legacy that will be left behind in addition to the present. Future generations will be motivated to carry on this crucial job by the positive legacy we leave behind. Antigua Leo Club serves as evidence,” the release concluded.
